Vegetable Dyed Abacus, Organic Wooden Toy

₹709.00Price

The abacus, the magical mind opener, as known in the eastern world, is threatened into extinction by the strides of technology. Yet, it may be known that the people who created todays technology originate from the time and space of the abacus itself - where clarity, visual memory, calculations, fractions, mental speed and such other, found their source and anchorage. Ironically Business at the speed of thoughta revered quote of Bill Gates himself, expresses gratitude to the mind, over matter. Strange though it may sound, in todays day and age, but then those who might push the case of the humble abacus gently, into the young, might help create the greatest innovators of the future. Handmade by artisans from Channapatna, they struggle to sustain the tradition of the past. A great learning tool, even in today's day and age.

Kondapalli and Channapatna both in the south of India continue to create toys out of soft wood and vegetable dyes. While Kondapallis origin has its roots down 400 odd years, Channapatna evolved around 200 years ago under the influence of the then King Tipu Sultan who invited artisans from Persia to train local artisans in this art form. Surrendered to extinction, both saw their revival only in the last few decades, where a small marginalized community recreated this hand craft in stunning colours and amazing forms, that charm the few who have been exposed to it.
